Friday 17 March:
SciFi US 9PM EST/PST - Rose (US Premiere!)
USA - The sale of Doctor Who to SciFi Channel http://www.scifi.com made headlines this week. The deal puts Series One (the 13 episodes with Christopher Eccleston) on Fridays at 9PM Eastern/Pacific as part of Sci-Fi Friday, SciFi's heavily promoted original series lineup. Doctor Who begins on Friday, March 17. The 3 shows currently featured in the lineup (Stargate: SG-1, Stargate Atlantis, and Battlestar Galactica) will have finished their current seasons and will likely be in repeats till July. Battlestar Galactica will almost certainly be taken off Friday like it was during repeats last fall, with Stargate repeats or new Sci-Fi programming airing with Doctor Who. SciFi will air series 1 and has an option to pick up series 2 if they are happy with the ratings. The official Doctor Who website http://www.bbc.co.uk/doctorwho still has a front page hyping the US sale as this column goes to print - warning, the singing and fireworks are somewhat noisy if you are working at an office computer.
Assuming the ratings are ok, expect SciFi to air series 1 in order
with a pre-emption on Friday, May 26 for their annual 4 day Memorial
Day movie marathon. They will probably give the show heavy
advertising in the weeks leading up to the premiere. SciFi is
expected to put their March schedule online on either Wednesday,
February 1 or Thursday, February 2 - when this happens we will know
whether there will be any special programming tied into the premiere.
BBC Worldwide issued a press release about the US sale (came online
on the 17th but is dated the 13th).
http://www.bbc.co.uk/pressoffice/commercial/worldwidestories/pressrel
eases/2006/01_january/doctor_who_sci_fi.shtml
No word on the status of the classic Doctor Who series episodes. They have been in limbo while BBC Worldwide Americas has tried to sell the new series. Public TV stations were not allowed to renew their contracts and the remaining stations were not allowed to buy new stories. 2 stations currently air classic Doctor Who (MPT http://www.mpt.org and IPTV http://www.iptv.org ) under existing contracts. Now that the new series has a buyer, I expect that the classic series' status will be clarified soon. If it remains on those 2 public TV stations then they'll probably offer it to all public TV stations again. Or it could move to cable. Or they could bury the show altogether so US viewers only focus on the new episodes. Expect something to happen before the SciFi premiere date (March 17).
Now that the US has a deal for Doctor Who, completing the list of 5
core countries that were always expected to get the show (UK, USA,
Canada, Australia, New Zealand), hopefully fans will keep interested
in Doctor Who's international sales. Doctor Who aired worldwide in
its original heyday and it's in the best long term interest of the
show for as many people to be able to enjoy it as possible. There's
still over 150 countries left for it to sell to. In that vein:
Spain/Portugal - Satellite channel People + Arts is premiering Doctor Who in your countries this week (Thursday 19 January). Episodes air 7 times in a week - Thursdays at 6:30PM (premiere) and 2:30AM, Fridays at 6:30AM and 3PM, Saturdays at 6AM, 2PM, and 9:30PM.
Israel - Satellite channel Yes Weekend http://www.yesweekend.co.il also premieres Doctor Who this weekend (Friday 20 January). Thanks to Adi. Most of its airings will be replacing the crime drama Numb3rs. Broadcast times are Friday at 7:13PM and 10:56PM, Saturday at 2:46PM, next Wednesday at 9:30PM and 1:15AM (late night).
Japan - no official announcement has been made, but the BBC press
release above lists Japan as one of the countries that Doctor Who
has been sold to (while omitting several other countries). This is
the first evidence that a Japanese sale has been made. No
broadcaster announced yet. Here's hoping the show comes quickly.
Denmark - the same BBC press release gives the name of the
broadcaster in Denmark - Danmarks Radio. This is the first time we
have had the name of the broadcaster for Denmark. Premiere date
unknown.
Torchwood - Outpost Gallifrey http://www.gallifreyone.com is
reporting that filming of Doctor Who spinoff series Torchwood has
been postponed till the Summer, probably June or July. Torchwood is
being developed for BBC Three and features a group of people working
on the UK's secret Torchwood project (which plays a role in "The
Christmas Invasion" and series 2 of Doctor Who). John Barrowman is
due to reprise his role of Captain Jack Harkness in Torchwood, a
character who was in the last 5 episodes of Doctor Who series 1.
Prior to the filming delay, it was expected that Torchwood would air
on BBC 3 in the second half of 2006, between Doctor Who series 2 and
the 2006 Christmas episode. Torchwood is due to have a 13 episode
series.
"Doctor Who Friday" - The BBC
http://www.bbc.co.uk/doctorwho/news/cult/news/drwho/2006/01/17/28905.
shtml are reporting that there will be a children's magazine
programme related to Doctor Who running concurrently with Series 2.
It will air on BBC One under the CBBC banner. On the BBC Wales Jobs
section of their website there is a Doctor Who section
http://www.bbc.co.uk/wales/southeast/sites/doctorwho/pages/jobs.shtml
which indicates that there are jobs open for "Doctor Who Friday".
It looks like Doctor Who Friday would serve a similar purpose for
older children that Doctor Who Confidential does for the adult
Doctor Who audience. Clearly the BBC is hoping to build interest in
Doctor Who among the younger side of their audience.
Canadian fans who were concerned by the delay of the Series One DVD
release received good news with the US Doctor Who TV deal - the
Canadian release was back on for February 14th (Valentine's Day) -
US release on July 4th (US Independence Day). As of this writing
Amazon.ca http://www.amazon.ca had changed the release date for
Canada till March 7th, but it should still be out on DVD there
before the US TV premiere. Canada's reward for buying Doctor Who
faster.
The BBC Press Office http://www.bbc.co.uk/pressoffice and C21 Media
http://www.c21media.net often announce when a Doctor Who
international sale occurs. Worth keeping an eye on, just in case.

It's all too easy to lose track of your friends, to let time pass
assuming you can catch up later. Now Harold, I'm fairly certain
you're running Heaven's computer system by now and started giving it
an upgrade, and you're probably reading this. You're missed down
here. Thanks for the memories, and for being a good friend to me and
my family. See you again someday.
Thanks for reading. Until next week, take care.
